A look at Modena’s disused railways – SGUARDI SULLA RETE DELLE FERROVIE DISMESSE MODENESI

A LOOK AT MODENA’S DISUSED RAILWAYS is an educational project involving local secondary schools in activities and workshops both in the field, along disused railway lines (11-13 March), and at school (4 March and final event) and at the various premises of the project partners (April-May). On GeoNight 2026, students will be welcomed at the headquarters of the Province of Modena to learn about what was once the Modena provincial railway network. The project will conclude in May with a public event open to citizens. The Museums and Botanic Garden System of Modena and Reggio Emilia University (Unimore) promotes the project; partners are the Departments of Chemical and Geological Sciences, Life Sciences, and Linguistic and Cultural Studies at Unimore, the Municipality of Modena Education Department (MEMo), and the Municipal and Provincial Historical Archives (Archivio Storico del Comune di Modena e Archivio Storico della Provincia di Modena).
The participating school is the Baggi Institute in Sassuolo (MO), teacher Alessandro Ferri.
Main objectives:
Raise awareness and share the heritage of values embodied in the network of disused railways that once crossed the province of Modena and which today risks falling into oblivion.

Together with students from the Baggi Institute in Sassuolo, we explore the rich legacy of plans, maps and documents produced to build the more than 100 km of Modena’s provincial railway network, most of which is now disused.
