Contested spaces and social injustices: the practice of territory for a civic and active geography
Description:
The space we traverse every day is not simply a neutral backdrop, but a vivid reflection of the political, economic and social choices that shape our coexistence. On the occasion of Geography Night, this meeting invites citizens to lift the veil on the ‘political nature’ of our places: why does a border unite or divide? How can a neighbourhood generate inclusion instead of resistance?
Reflecting on spatial organisation today means, first and foremost, strengthening civic awareness. Understanding that managing a resource, naming a street or redeveloping a suburb are symbolic acts allows every citizen to move from being a passive spectator to a conscious protagonist in their own territory.
For this reason, the event promotes direct and interrelated dialogue between the key players in territorial transformation: from the academic world, called upon to offer interpretations and scientific analysis tools; to political decision-makers, responsible for strategic choices and future vision; to social and cultural actors, who animate the space by giving voice to issues of identity and cohesion.
From the alleys of Salerno to the ends of the earth: we compare real stories and major global challenges to understand how to reclaim the space in which we live. Not a lesson, but an open citizenship workshop to build a city without physical and socio-cultural barriers together. The goal is to transform potential conflict into a shared project, where geography becomes the common language for building a more equitable, resilient and participatory community.
Main objectives:
Highlight the consequences of spatial organisation on social cohesion in a territorial context through various case studies, from an inter-scale perspective and interrelated points of view.
