Living with earthquakes 

Short presentation of the event: 1. Radionica i predavanje: Živjeti s potresima
Učenici će kroz kratko uvodno predavanje saznati o povijesti seizmologije kao jedne od mladih grana geofizike. Nastavnica geografije održati će kratko predavanje o endogenim pokretima te objasniti njihove uzroke i posljedice s naglaskom na potrese. Učenici će naučiti razlikovati vrste potresnih valova kao i razlog zašto nastaju potresi. Zahvaljujući aplikaciji GeoCro proučit će gibanje Jadranske mikroploče kao i poziciju rasjeda u Hrvatskoj. Nakon toga će učenici simulirati potres na modelu kuće. Pomoću aplikacije Lab4Physics i akcelerometra mjerit će ubrzanje kuće koja se nalazi na različitim podlogama (pamučna vata, olovke, stiropor…) te će takvim pokusima doći do sličnih zaključaka kao i seizmolozi koji procjenjuju ugrozu građevina. Za kraj će im biti prezentiran dio rezultata i zaključaka do kojih su došli studenti seizmologije koji su procjenjivali vulnerabilnost poznatih zagrebačkih građevina (Katedrala, HNK, Mimara, DHMZ…) i time osvojili Rektorovu nagradu. 

Through a short introductory lecture, students will learn about the history of Seismology as one of the young branches of Geophysics. The Geography teacher will give a short lecture on endogenous movements and explain their causes and consequences with an emphasis on earthquakes. Students will learn to distinguish the types of earthquake waves as well as the reason why earthquakes occur. Thanks to the GeoCro application, they will study the motion of the Adriatic microplate as well as the position of faults in Croatia. After that, students will simulate an earthquake on a house model. Using the Lab4Physics application and an accelerometer, they will measure the acceleration of a house on different surfaces (cotton wool, pens, styrofoam…) and such experiments will lead to similar conclusions as seismologists who assess the threat to buildings. At the end, they will be presented with some of the results and conclusions reached by Seismology students who assessed the vulnerability of famous Zagreb buildings (Cathedral, HNK, Mimara, DHMZ…) and thus won the Rector’s Award.
