Evento Ge.SoCountry: Italy – City: Milan – Address:

Free the Map. Towards a new Cartography of Borders and Migration
Description:
This event is part of a series of public outreach seminars organised by the AGEI – Geografie per la società. The seminars aim to bring critical geographical debates to a wider audience.
This session focuses on counter-mapping, migration and spatial justice, building on the work of political geographer Henk van Houtum (Radboud University). In an interview-style conversation with Matteo Del Fabbro (University of Milan), we will explore how dominant cartographic representations of borders and migration influence public discourse and political narratives, and how alternative mapping practices can challenge exclusionary narratives and highlight lived experiences, power relations, and inequalities.
This accessible yet theoretically grounded discussion is designed as a contribution to GeoNight, combining academic reflection, public engagement and visual thinking.
