Geographies of Us: A Collaborative Map and Creative Space

Description:

To celebrate GeoNight, the Department of Environmental & Geographical Science is creating a collaborative map and creative space in the EGS foyer. This relaxed, drop-in activity invites students, staff, and visitors to reflect on the places that matter to them and to contribute to a shared, visual “geography” of our community.
Participants can choose how they want to take part:
• mark a meaningful place on a large map and add a short note or memory
• colour or decorate small geographic-themed outline drawings (dunes, contour lines, fynbos, mountains, birds, wind patterns) and add them to the map
• create a quick A5 sketch inspired by patterns or landforms and display it on the wall
• or simply enjoy the emerging installation throughout the day
The result is a living artwork that grows as people add their stories, landscapes, and creative elements – a reminder of the many ways we are connected to places across South Africa, Africa, and the world.
This informal, flexible event requires no fixed schedule. The installation will be available all day, and photos of the final map will be shared as UCT’s contribution to GeoNight.

Main objectives:

The result is a living artwork that grows as people add their stories, landscapes, and creative elements – a reminder of the many ways we are connected to places across South Africa, Africa, and the world.

Event language: The official languages of South Africa (translated into English as official language of the university)

The event will be: mixed, in presence with streaming/remote participation (the link must be indicated in this form)
