Transborder indigenous peoples in Amazonia
Description:
This paper will address the exchange relationship between the indigenous peoples of Oiapoque (Amapá), focusing on the Karipuna people and their dynamics with territories, borders, cities, and negotiations. Considering the influence of different social and cultural networks, as well as the need for territorial protection and the traditions of their system.
The Tiriyó, who call themselves Tarëno, are an indigenous ethnic group inhabiting the Tumucumaque Mountains whose traditional territory is crossed by the international border between Brazil and Suriname. In the late 1950s, the Tiriyó were contacted by members of the Brazilian Air Force and Franciscan friars interested in creating, respectively, an airstrip and a religious mission. The implementation of the Trinomial fostered the intensification of the acculturation process of the Tiriyó and Kaxuyana.
Religious missions among the Tiriyó: Brazilian side, Surinamese side. For a long time, borders have been spaces of conquest, negotiation, and passage. In the 1960s, based on the idea of a “demographic void,” the Brazilian Air Force sought to demarcate its presence on the Brazil-Suriname border through a Mission and an Advanced Border Post, whose project consisted of protecting natural resources, monitoring airspace, and promoting the centralization of indigenous people on the Brazilian side.
