We Love the Sea – Let’s Protect It
Description:
The workshop “We Love the Sea, We Protect the Sea” is designed as an interdisciplinary activity that connects biology and geography with the aim of developing environmental awareness and a responsible attitude towards the sea in older primary school students. Through an investigative and problem-based approach, students learn about the sea as a complex geographical space and a rich biological ecosystem.
The workshop begins with an analysis of the geographical features of the Adriatic Sea, where students connect the relief, depth and position of the sea with the diversity of living things. They then explore the distribution of organisms in the sea and explain the adaptations of plants and animals to different conditions, such as light, depth and sea currents. Special emphasis is placed on biodiversity and the importance of marine habitats, including coastal areas and the seabed.
In the second part of the workshop, students identify the main threats to the marine ecosystem, such as plastic pollution, overfishing and climate change, and analyze their consequences for living things and humans. The final part encourages students to reflect on personal responsibility by proposing specific measures for the conservation of the sea. The workshop develops critical thinking, environmental literacy, and active citizenship, emphasizing the message that love for the sea also includes its protection.
Main objectives:
Educational objectives
– understand the sea as a geographical space and biological ecosystem*
– get to know the diversity of marine life and their adaptation to the habitat
– explain the connection between natural characteristics of the sea (depth, light, temperature) and the distribution of organisms
– develop ecological awareness and responsibility towards the sea
– encourage a positive attitude towards nature conservation
– raise awareness of the role of humans in pollution, but also in protecting the sea
Sustainable development goals
– understand the concept of sustainable use of marine resources
– recognize the main threats to marine ecosystems (plastic, pollution, climate change)
– encourage students to concrete, everyday actions to preserve the sea
Competence development
– develop critical thinking and inference
– encourage cross-curricular connections between biology and geography
– strengthen collaborative learning, communication and discussion
