Eco-detectives

Description:

A short exercise on the proper recycling of local waste (plastic, paper, biowaste) and a discussion on how waste reduction reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
Students, divided into two groups, will measure the air quality in the schoolyard and the city center. Using air quality sensors, students measure the level of PM 2.5 and PM 10 particles.
Parallel to the air measurement, students will use the “line” method to count the vehicles that pass in 10 minutes to correlate traffic with the sensor results. They will enter the results into a table and note the difference between the “green zone” of the school and the “concrete zone” of the center, and the temperature and air pressure will be measured using a barometer and thermometer. A short exercise on the proper recycling of local waste (plastic, paper, biowaste) and a discussion on how waste reduction reduces greenhouse gas emissions.
They will make eco-balls from seeds: Mixing clay, humus and seeds of indigenous plants or flowers that attract pollinators. These balls will be “planted” by students in neglected urban areas or in the school garden to encourage biodiversity and air filtration.
The workshops will be conducted during geography and biology classes.
