Exploring the changes in the city of Angers from working-class neighbourhoods to the city centre: towards a tourist, student and gentrified city?
Description:
The city of Angers has undergone numerous changes that have shaped the city we see today. These changes date back to the 1960s and 1970s, with the demolition of working-class housing along the Maine River and the construction of major roads. At the same time, construction began on historic suburbs neighbourhoods (La Roseraie, Belle-Beille, Montplaisir). Several decades later, how can these changes be seen in the city? How has the construction of universities affected sububrs neighbourhoods? What changes have taken place there? How has the arrival of a large student population changed everyday life, particularly in the city centre? The city of Angers is also a tourist destination and is ranked among the cities where life is good: ‘la douceur angevine’ (the sweetness of Angers). How do these realities play out? Can we talk about overtourism or gentrification in Angers? Does mobility allow us to see the full picture of inequality? We offer an interpretation of the city of Angers and these changes through a 1.5-hour urban walk from the student and working-class neighbourhood of Belle-Beille to the edge of the city centre. We will draw on work published in the Atlas Social d’Angers, among other sources.
