Walking and reading the Gargano landscape

Description:

AIIG Foggia promotes a GeoNight event along a breathtaking trail, connecting Rignano Garganico and San Marco in Lamis, in Apulia, as an outdoor geography experience. The walk starts at 6:00 p.m. in San Marco in Lamis and ends in Rignano Garganico, combining field observation with geographical interpretation. Along the route, participants will explore the karst landscape of the Gargano, land-use patterns, historical pathways, and issues of environmental sustainability. The initiative is organized in collaboration with Speleo Team Montenero, the local municipal administrations, Fare Ambiente, Gruppo Camminatori Gargauni and Senza Cemento Nordic Walking, highlighting walking as a powerful tool for geographical knowledge and active citizenship. The final session will provide a moment of shared reflection and geographical restitution, fully in the spirit of GeoNight.

Main objectives:

– to enhance geographical knowledge and field-based learning through direct observation of the Gargano karst landscape;
– to analyse human–environment interactions by examining land use, historical routes and settlement patterns along the breathtaking trail;
– to promote walking as a methodological and didactic approach in geography, integrating spatial analysis, cartography and experiential learning;
– to raise environmental awareness and sustainability consciousness, focusing on landscape protection and low-impact territorial practices;
– to strengthen institutional and community-based collaboration in the dissemination of geographical research and education.
