Functional areas in Ukraine: vision for the future

Description:

The issue of assessing territories and defining functions is typical for geographic research in Ukraine. At the state level, the main document which reflects the relevant results and, however, needs to be updated, is the General Scheme of Planning of the Territory of Ukraine. One of the decisive determinant for updating it is the consequences of Russian aggression. They have radically changed the state and status of most Ukrainian territories, logistics schemes, and the specialization of many regions, and have led to increased risks and significant losses of biodiversity. At the same time, it is advisable to further improve approaches to the functional territories delimitation, harmonize them in the context of the ESPON program outputs, etc.

Objectives:

The objective of the event is to review, from a geographical perspective, approaches to the definition and use of Ukraine’s functional territories in the context of the war with Russia and the changing geostrategic vectors. In the future, such an expert platform should be useful for updating spatial planning documents.
